In this demanding and seductive body of work, Matt Jones presents luscious, mind boggling, liquid universes of surfaces that attack his various areas of obsession—science fiction, theoretical physics, the occult, ancient history, and the power of the imagination. These abstract paintings do not provide clearly trodden answers of intent but float perfectly on the precipices of definition. They drift between time and space, highlighting the ethereal potential that calls the in between home.
"Einstein showed the world that space and time behave in astoundingly unfamiliar ways. Now cutting age research has integrated his discoveries into a quantum universe with numerous hidden dimensions coiled into the fabric of the cosmos- dimensions whose lavishly entwined geometry may well hold the key to some of the most profound questions ever posed"- Brian Green, in his introduction to his angle on Superstring Theory in An Elegant Universe.
Matt Jones' paintings, Geister, or "ghosts" in English, aim to replicate some of these numerous hidden dimensions. Through a very particular and finely tuned form of process based abstraction, Jones creates the unseemly.
Matt Jones is a Cooper Union graduate who was awarded the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Grant at Yale. Jones has shown extensively in New York and abroad, most recently exhibiting with The Hole, Anonymous Gallery, Bleecker Street Arts Club, and Freight and Volume. He has also shown recently at Mass MoCA, the NADA Art Fair, and the Morris Museum. His press includes reviews in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Artnet, Paper Magazine, Purple Diary, and I-D magazine amongst others. Matt Jones lives and works in Brooklyn.
The Richard J. Massey Foundation is open Monday - Friday from 10 - 5 pm by appointment only
